When you are in the gym forget ego. You don’t need it. It actually slows you
down. When you are out of the gym, then you can wear you tight t-shirts and show
off your results. You’ve earned it. But in the gym make an effort to be in there
to work on your own progress.
Ego in this sense is counterproductive. It makes you lift big weights for its
own sake. Yes you look tough pushing those big plates but you end up under
stimulating your muscles and risk injury. Further more I am more impressed by
people with big muscles than a 10 stone guy pushing massive weights, unless of
course they want to be small from choice rather than from following the wrong
training principles. Use your ego to your advantage.
You can say ‘I know something you don’t and happily move the pin up the stack to
lower the weight after He-man has finished his set. Then you can train in the
way you know will benefit your goals, not massage your ego. Why ruin your
progress just to look good for some nobody in the gym?
Focusing on others is not going to help you. Focus on yourself is the key. Focus
not on anything other than what you are doing at each moment in time. Don’t
worry about those bigger guys in the gym, they started off like you did,
sometimes even smaller. Worrying about bigger guys makes you lose focus and
when you are so self conscious it can have a devastating effect on your
training.
There’s also someone bigger than you, or has something you wish you had. High
biceps peaks, wider shoulders, whatever. Equally many people will be looking at
you and thinking the same thing, which you have something they wish they had.
Don’t worry about showing off to the smaller guys either. You know how they feel
and everyone has to start somewhere, so just focus on building your own fortress
strong and tall and save all your energy and focus into micro waving those
muscles and taking the steps needed to enter the land of the super freaks!
